You can find anything in New York. Clowns, jugglers, trapeze artists. Snake charmers, sword swallowers, high-wire trapeze performers. Thieves, con men, hustlers (not all of whom are located on Wall Street or Washington). Artists, actors, and dance skaters. The list goes on, ad nauseum... Actually, I have to admit that I don't have direct, first-hand experience with most of these categories ... but on the Fourth of July, I became somewhat more acquainted with the final item on my list: dance skaters, and especially the ones who perform in Central Park on summer weekends. A few years ago, I had the unexpected experience of wandering through a section of Central Park near the Bandshell, a little south of the Belvedere Fountain and the 72nd Street transverse through the park, where I saw several people dancing quite gracefully and acrobatically on their roller-blade skates, to the sound of music that seemed to be coming from someone's old-fashioned "boom-box" portable radio/cassette player. I didn't pay much attention to it at the time, but it was enough to focus my attention on a small notice that appeared in a website listing (the "New York scoop" of interesting events taking place in New York City during the final week of June. The Central Park Dance Skaters Association even has a website describing their activities, and they gather (and/or perform, depending on your perspective) in the mid-to-late afternoons on most Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer.
