Malfunction: Sentimental Ghost is Missing Though we both work in multiple mediums, drawing is fundamental; a major aspect of both of our work, whether it is video, sculpture, application programming, animation or audio. We also share an interest in re-contextualizing the found object. Brent Watanabe: Programming computer applications has bridged the gap between drawing, audio and video... the drawn images exist as both still and dynamic imagery. It adds a 4th dimension to the act of drawing. It allows me to code (create) general rules and systems, which organize drawings and sounds in logically structured but not predetermined compositions. For example, the Random Drawing Generator functions as a drawing and soundtrack synthesizer. Visually, it creates random unique compositions from a series of pencil drawn objects, layering, flipping and mirroring the objects according to the underlying code. These visual compositions are complimented by audio recordings, which the generator arranges into dense, randomly generated soundscapes. The installation is an active system controlled by four networked computers, each piece interdependant on the other pieces; the landscape communicates with the crying dog which communicates with the random drawing generator which communicates with the soundscape...
