Here's some "Classic Queen" (from the 1992 Hollywood Records cassette release) - the song "Under Pressure" (with David Bowie) plays for about a minute and a half on a recently acquired GE cassette player/recorder I got from a friend who had to clear out a family member's apartment once they passed away. If you have some long-neglected cassettes and at least one player, an old Walkman, or tape deck, dust them off, put away the iPod, the iTunes, Spotify, etc for a while and, for a brief moment, relive the not-that-distant sonic past in all its hissy glory.

The interview audio here is from the 1980 premiere of the Australian movie Fatty Finn, which was probably around the 18th December 1980. A publicity event for the movie was staged with a goat race with some of the principal child actors involved which was at the back of the Sydney, George St-Hoyts Cinema, now Event Cinema, in Kent St, Sydney. 2SER FM kids program called Phase 2 was there with Adrian, Anthony, James & Marc to record audio in the form of vox pops but also spoke to Rebecca Rigg and Ben Oxenbould and other cast members. The only adult actor really present on the day was Ross Higgins, who appears here. The people interviewing were marginally older by about 6 years of the child stars involved, as such the questions were not well prepared and repetitive but more than a few of the actors were gifted talkers and saved the project. I've heard a more recent audio interview on U Tube from Ben Oxenbould and its fair to say he was glowing in his praise of the movie Fatty Finn and the 1980 description here of how the initial process of his involvement occurred, matches the more recent U Tube interview. Near the end of this you'll hear Ben do an ID for Phase 2 on 2SER.FM then the title music track from the movie, Fatty Finn. It's time for a re-release of this movie and it should be restored to a high definition format. FYI - tech heads, the audio was recorded on a BASF Ferrochrome cassette, using a Marantz Superscope, a portable, semi-professional tape recorder ...

MiniDisc (MD) didn't catch on in the high end home audio market but they are very popular with professionals. You'll find them in radio stations and recording studios and many serious audio archivists use MD for long term storage. I used to have several of these machines but now I only have this one and a small portable Walkman type which is still packed away in storage. :) JC

Anthony, Matt, Barry, Mike & Karen

Circa 1981 +/- Recorded in Anthony's bedroom on an old mono, portable cassette recorder. There wasn't any "engineering", we just threw it on the bed and hit record. This was very early in the game, probably near the first time we played together. Unfortunately we didn't record much or take any pictures. If anyone has any photos, videos or recordings, I'd love to check them out. I hope I got Karen's last name right. She left the band soon after I joined and I did not know her very well. Matt passed away in 1984 and Anthony just a few days ago, 02/14/2012. The guitar screw-ups in this clip were all mine. I eventually put my guitar down and did most of the vocals. Barry was more than enough on guitar to fill everything in. Anthony was not a uber-technical drummer, but there was never any tempo deviation with him behind the drums. This made it very easy to play. Matt was one of those people that could play any instrument. Having brothers as the drummer and bass player made the band that much tighter. I wish I had some later recordings, we weren't bad.

This is the box with the removable Walkman-style tape deck. Most of the time these decks are derelict, and this was no exception. There was a clutch-style gear completely wrecked inside, and luckily I wound up finding a NOS replacement. Installed a new belt onto the transport assembly and off she went! Along with the deck, the box features an AM/FM/SW tuner and removable speakers. The speakers also house the DC power supply--provided by eight C cells. Music is from Spyro Gyra around 1979.

I found some 8-track tapes in my grandfather's basement and decided that I might want to listen to them. Around that same time, I saw this Panasonic RS-847U 8-track player show up in a thrift store. A little over 38 years after it was made and sold, it still works perfectly and looks nice. I also got the owner's manual, a schematic (it's all simple transistor logic) and a few other goodies. The tapes I played were thrown in with the deal, so I could see if it worked. It also weighs a ton and could probably hurt someone if you dropped it on their head.

Just a quick look at my mobile Pro Tools 9 setup. I'm using an Apogee Duet as my interface so I can take advantage of their great converters when I track some vocals. I have a Seagate Momentus XT 7200 inside my Mac and 6 gigs of ram which is max for this 2.53Ghz model, and a pair of Glyph Portagigs 7200 for my audio and sound library drives. Everything connected via FireWire 800. I'm using a 800/400 cable to use the Apogee which is only Firewire 400. Finally just a pair of Bose, which aren't the best for true reference cause they are a bit bassey. I'm looking for a pair of portable and yet flat sounding speakers. Anyone have any ideas? Perhaps Audio Engine? Anyway I'm glitch free and loving it. Cya.

This is a weird-style recorder. It is a vertical-reel reel-to-reel. DC bias. 5-transistors, and needed some new CAPACITORS... I wonder what the Reel Master will think of this recorder. This is probably a rare machine, found at an estate sale in a storage warehouse.

i remember listening to this back in da dayz on my portable "JONES" cassette player/recorder that cost an arm and a leg from the Littlewoods catalog, all i can say is... the batteries only lasted about four hours...and sticking em on top of the parafin heater (to get a little bit more charge) became a daily accurance.
