highlight: Sir Roger explains a tape recorder From the invention of the tape recorder in the late 1890's, and the tinkering with wire reels, paper reels and finally ferroxide coated plastic tape invented by BASF in 1935 (formerly AEG), there was much interest to commercialize this technology. This was done with zeal after the war, in the early 1950's by Philips in the Netherlands and Sony in Japan. The US companies meanwhile concentrated on making the best recording equipment for use in the movies and the recording studios. Philips produced many world first's of a high standard in the early years for the general public from better quality light bulbs to radios, record players, tape recorders then television and video. Greater advances happened when Philips and Sony collaborated on the CD Player project. Philips moved to Japanese production to relaise more profits, and Sony moved into Hollywood USA. In all this time customer's only wanted greater choice in equipment to meet their particular needs. Those on the move wanted greater portability. The first portable television, well... it wasn't really portable at all. You could take it from your house to a friend or relatives house to watch together there. Because it needed to be plugged into the mains power. Until the EKCO portable television (see elsewhere on MKKiani channel) there was no first portable tv -- just attempts to misuse the term portable.
