this is my Vintage personal stereo from 1984 that someone was gonna throw out so I grabbed it, I cant believe people will just throw out vintage equipment like this just because its missing a battery cartridge, it takes 4 AA batteries in a cartridge type holder but that was missing when I got the unit so I have this rechargeable Ni-Cd battery pack that fits perfectly inside the compartment for now maybe i can find a cartridge for this unit other than that theres nothing treally wrong with this unit it works great and it sounds great too as you'll hear at the end of this video, there is some warbling in the FM stereo but im not complainin, I have a Fine Young Cannibals singles tape with the songs 'she drives me crazy' and 'Pull the sucker off' on it. this unit works great it was well taken care of when I found it and it will continue to be well taken care of by me its in great condition. well I hope you like this vid shoot me some comments if you liked it or if you have any questions about anything, oh and one more thing the headphones used in this video I repaired them they just needed a good cord I got those at big lots for i think if I remember correctly The whining noise you hear between the stations is from my wireless router/network it does this on all my radios, would an RF shield on the wires help? I replaced some capacitors and oiled motor and cleaned the rubber on the rim-drive flywheel. This is a capstan drive machine. UPDATE as of 2012: I have changed out a 10 Ω resistor (a load resistor during record) which pulled some current away from getting to the head and meter, and had made it not pick up sound too well. I put in a 1kΩ resistor in place of the 10Ω and now it can pick up sound quite well. This is one of my favorite recorders.

This was my Grandmother's stereo - a Sharp GF-320 AM/FM cassette AC/DC portable with detachable speakers. My mother paid about 0 for it around Christmas of 1985. It has a surprisingly good tone and volume for the small size of the speakers. Something went wrong with the cassette deck around 2003. This was the only piece of equipment my Grandmother ever owned that she could play her own music on - surprising since she was 75 years old when she got it. Before this, she solely had a General Electric flip-clock radio and an inexpensive York transistor radio that picked up TV channels. For years I picked up big-band and easy-listening records (like Bing Crosby & Lawrence Welk) and taped them for her to play on this unit. When the cassette deck stopped functioning in '03, she gave it to me, as there were no more easy-listening stations on the air in New Orleans. I plan on getting the cassette deck working one day and finding a battery cover. This is not something I would normally collect, but it has a lot of sentimental value and is really a very decent portable stereo.

It has a surprisingly good tone and volume for the small size of the speakers. Something went wrong with the cassette deck around 2003. This was the only piece of equipment my Grandmother ever owned that she could play her own music on - surprising since she was 75 years old when she got it. Before this, she solely had a General Electric flip-clock radio and an inexpensive York transistor radio that picked up TV channels. For years I picked up big-band and easy-listening records (like Bing Crosby & Lawrence Welk) and taped them for her to play on this unit. When the cassette deck stopped functioning in '03, she gave it to me, as there were no more easy-listening stations on the air in New Orleans. I plan on getting the cassette deck working one day and finding a battery cover. This is not something I would normally collect, but it has a lot of sentimental value and is really a very decent portable stereo.

Quite impressive for an old vintage 8-track recorder using an Akai ACT-300 Recording Tape.

A nice classic little Claricon (made by Hitachi) 3-inch reel to reel tape recorder. It runs at approx. 7 1/2 IPS (19 cm/s). DC bias, permanent magnet erasure. Manual level control. Transistors are germanium. If you request, I may make a video showing the inside. Anyone that thinks these little rim-drive type of recorders are worthless and should be thrown away is wrong. These little recorders are really fun to collect and play with. I recommend that now one throws these away or breaks them. They are collectible, fun pieces, no longer manufactured.

The Norelco Continental 101 vintage tape recorder dating from approx. 1964 is documented in this video along with "naked" views of the internal workings of the machine. It was advertised as a "professional quality" portable tape recorder, and sold in the amazing price range of to 9! Considering that many full size stereo reel to reel tape recorders sold for about the same price (ie Emerson-Telectro, Webcor, Estey tape recorders, etc.) with many more features, it seems that Norelco had a very high opinion and expectations of the Continental 101 vintage tape recorder. As vintage audio, it deserves to be cataloged for historical reference due to its quality and rarity. This unit was found in the trash. It had battery leakage and some water damage. Some of the rubber drive parts had actually melted (a common complaint with vintage electronics - they didn't always use quality rubber for the parts) and were replaced with plumber's "O" rings. One special feature was the use of a rubber belt to control both rewind and back tension when in the record or playback mode. This belt has been stretched beyond operational limits and was replaced temporarily with a rubber band (not the best solution, but it did restore function to the machine). Although touted as a "professional quality" machine, the Continental 101 vintage tape recorder only ran at 1 -7/8 ips, a very slow operational speed notorious for poor high frequency response. Not surprisingly, the amplifier, even as vintage ...

This is a presentation of this very nice recorder with all the manuals and paperwork to it. It is AC bias and of good quality. She told me that she had a hard time getting these through security and customs because they though it was a bomb!!

It only has a 90day warranty due to it's low price tag-about Yes, I still use CDs, even for portable purposes-I have a CD walkman as well. I don't just play old CDs I already had, either-I have actually bought some new CDs recently. I know you can carry a lot more music in a smaller space with an MP3 walkman, but I'm not much into that sort of thing for reasons I'm not going to get into here. That said, I don't dis-respect people who DO like MP3 players-however I salute you if you are still living with CDs The songs you hear are "umbrella" "stronger" and "fight fire with fire". I did not write these songs, and do not intend to make money off of this video in any way shape or form.

Part of an MA portfolio, the Ghetto Bastard 'was derived from a Sharp Portable Radio Cassette Player that I found in the wheelie bin outside my house. It was in perfect working order and provided inspiration for this project. It fitted my ethos of re-using discarded technology and my own remit of portability.' Alterations included hacking the AM receiver to create squeaks and squeals (these controlled by two large bolts, one at each end of the device_; removing one of the speakers and placing it back-to-back with the other to create feedback (while filling the vacant socket with a mirror ball); and modification of the tape transports with the addition of a spindle on which a Barbie-style doll was mounted.

How to make an audio input on your car radio

Here I'm gonna show you how to make an input to your car radio (head unit) for connecting iPod, MP3 player, DVD, laptop, CD player AKA discman etc. First you need to find the tuner. In my example, it's standing vertically to the main board, located in a shielded case. It's connected with main board through soldered pins. I found pins that are audio output from tuner (in my unit there's a description of each pin). I cut lines that are connecting this output with preamplifier input, with scalpel. Then I mounted a double KIP switch and a 3.5mm female connector for input. I connect input, tuner and preamp input on the switch, so I can switch between tuner and audio input for listening. I know you can use FM transmitter or audio tape with 3.5mm male connector, but most of them produce low quality sound. This is a direct input into your unit with crystal clean sound and the best quality your unit or source can deliver. You just need to put the switch to input, choose the tuner source on your head unit and connect your source. You will hear the sound from your iPod, MP3 player or whatever you connect. The only "bad thing" is that on LCD you can see RDS or frequency of the radio station in background. But this won't bother you. And, don't seek your radio stations because, while it's searching, the sound will be muted. You need to have basic soldering skills and now what you're doing. here's a mini-review of this very nice MARANTZ PH-32W portable componet system it has Dolby on the left deck only w/music search sequential play on both single side each and both play very well and the eq can be switched in and out and lots other functions befitting a home stereo & of course Phono and aux inputs & ground and external termainals for ant, etc. and yes this is a 3-piece and this can be seperated and this can run on 10 D batteries although I haven't been successfull with this operating on batteries because the terminals are rusted.

I'd never heard of Playtapes, because they were introduced when I was a toddler. They were a cross between the principle of an 8-track and the small size of a cassette. In this case, they were endless loop like an 8-track, but only carried two channels. Each channel could be accessed by turning a knob on the player. Playtapes normally carried four songs on them, two songs each channel. The medium took off in 1967--youth grabbed them up for the most part--but its value dropped off when 8-tracks and cassettes took over. Plus, playtapes could only be played, never recorded. One exception--Smith Corona had a "living letters" format using playtapes. You could record and send a taped message to a loved one and they could play it back with their own recorder/player. This one is the Hipster, a somewhat larger unit of the time. Only big problems it had were a broken power switch and a worn belt. Switch has been repaired and I have yet to replace the belt. Just need to get some Playtapes and see how it performs--which, of course, will be the basis of another video....

Here's a nifty early 1980s piece of equipment...JVC's CX-500US combined a tape recorder, internal microphone, auxiliary input, AM/FM radio and a color television into one relatively portable package. It still works well today as demonstrated in this video. Small color TVs like this one seem to be very expensive. It was possible to buy a black and white one for as little as . Yet the price on the color ones never really dropped. Most of those cost at least 0 until LCD models replaced them. The cassette player does not record video at all. It is only capable of recording audio from TV broadcasts.

I never had this when I was young. Although before, I have records and I cannot play records. I really need a new needle because I used the original needle because it played almost noisy quality and it's a little bit quiet. Plays 33 1/3 RPM and 45 RPM (old) records but not 78 RPM records. Note: That's why I bought this one with the plug, because I can't find the newer one, the one that automatically stops when end of record is reached and the one with batteries. Recorded with a Sony Cyber-Shot/SteadyShot DSC-W330 Camera Before, my video is shaky, so I improved this video so it's zoomed in a little and it moves digitally.
