AC bias, and good quality. Unfortunately, it doesn't pick sound up that well, and is best for close range voice. I got this off eBay for .10 total. I replaced some capacitors and oiled motor and cleaned the rubber on the rim-drive flywheel. This is a capstan drive machine. UPDATE as of 2012: I have changed out a 10 Ω resistor (a load resistor during record) which pulled some current away from getting to the head and meter, and had made it not pick up sound too well. I put in a 1kΩ resistor in place of the 10Ω and now it can pick up sound quite well. This is one of my favorite recorders.
