Just this morning I experimented around and used a long animal balloon instead of string and came up with a "fretless" practice washtub-type bass. Obviously this works on the same principle and you don't need a stick for a fretboard as you employ the elasticity of the balloon instead. As the currency exchange rate was very favorable at that time, I was able to do this project in Tallinn at a fraction of the cost in the USA.
